In preparing for the future, are we preparing for the right thing? How do we even know what that right thing is?
27 Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.
God set a great example for us as we studied yesterday in that He prepared the world for the Coming of the Messiah. “When everything was ready, Jesus came…” Gal. 4:4. Let’s continue looking at His Coming today as we prepare for tomorrow, which is the celebration of the INCARNATION: When God came to earth in the form of a man.
6 Who, being in very nature[a] God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature[b] of a servant, being made in human likeness.
Jesus gave up His position as Co-Ruler of the Universe with all its glory and majesty. He emptied Himself of heaven and began human life as a baby, completely dependent upon the Holy Spirit for guidance and strength–just like us.
One of my favorite verses is John 17:24, which says, “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” THIS is what Jesus left to come to us. He wants US to experience it with Him!
8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!
Jesus’ sole purpose of coming to earth in the manner He did was to redeem mankind. How did He know? Let’s follow the logic:
- Jesus is the Word-John 1:1
- Jesus is the power behind the creation of the heavens and the earth-Genesis 1:3, Hebrews 1:2-3
- Jesus is the Author of the Word of God-Psalm 33:6-9, Revelation 19:13
- His Word prophesies about His own Coming:
- Genesis 3:15–Gal. 4:4“Seed of a Woman”
- Genesis 18:18–Acts 3:25“Promised seed of Abraham”
- Genesis 49:10–Luke 3:33“Promised seed of Jacob”
- Isaiah 9:7–Mt. 1:1“Heir to the throne of David”
- Micah 5:2–Mt. 2:1 “Place of birth”
- Daniel 9:25–Lu. 2:1-2 “Time of birth”
- Isaiah 7:14–Mt. 1:18 “Born of a virgin”
- Jeremiah 31:15–Mt. 2:16 “Massacre of infants”
As a side note, the statistical probability of these prophecies happening by chance are 10 to the 21st power, or 1 with 22 zeroes! Add to that 33 prophecies He fulfilled in 24 hours from the time He was in the Garden of Gethsemane to His death on the cross, and we have a statistical impossibility. Plus, there are many more prophecies that He fulfilled in His lifetime along with His resurrection! The Bible truly is a miracle book!
All that to say that Jesus knew why He was coming and what was in His future. Back to Philippians 2:
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus is back on His throne!
That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. Ephesians 1:19b-23
Why do we celebrate Christmas? Because Jesus came to rescue us by paying the penalty for our sin. We worship Him because He is on His throne, both in heaven and in our hearts.
Abba, I worship You today and look forward to seeing You in your glory. May I never lose the wonder and awe of the Advent even as I look forward to Easter. Bless my readers, Lord, with that same wonder and awe. Amen.
Lord, I lift Your name on high; Lord, I love to sing Your praises;
I’m so glad You’re in my life; I’m so glad You came to save us.
You came from heaven to earth to show the way,
From the earth to the cross my debt to pay,
From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky,
Lord, I lift Your name on high!
