Getting people to see reason is impossible. Without the Holy Spirit unveiling their eyes, they simply can’t see.
5 You who are simple, gain prudence;
you who are foolish, set your hearts on it.
6 Listen, for I have trustworthy things to say;
I open my lips to speak what is right.
When talking to someone about spiritual things, whether it’s the Gospel or Creation, we must always pray for the Spirit to open their eyes to the truth. All of creation gives testimony to God’s existence and power, but Satan has pulled the wool over their eyes in so many ways and in so many areas. Getting people hooked on sin keeps them chained to keeping the sin coming. Giving them alternative beliefs keeps them from searching for the truth.
Jesus calls us sheep. Sheep wander away just because. They are NOT diligent creatures concerning their own safety. They want what they want at the moment, which is grass from that area over there… then, over there…then, over there–until they are lost, caught in briars, fall in a hole, or become prey. WE NEED A SHEPHERD! Jesus is the Good Shepherd (John 10:14).
The veil that is over the hearts of people is their own willful pride. They are unwilling to accept that they are sheep. They would rather trust their own imaginings about right and wrong, origins, who God is and what He will and won’t do, and what is good for them. Not until they are willing to listen to reason will the Holy Spirit lift the veil.
The Apostle Paul talks about this veil in 2 Corinthians 3,
6b for the letter [the Law] kills, but the Spirit gives life.
The Old Sinai Covenant showed us that we cannot be right with God without the Spirit. Its job was to show us our sinful state.
7 Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, 8 will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? 9 If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!
The ministry of the Spirit in the New Covenant, which came through Christ: His life, death, resurrection and ascension, is SO MUCH more glorious than the first covenant.
12 Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. 13 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts.16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
We are to present the truth of God’s Word, the Gospel, and Creation and pray for the Spirit to convict their hearts. If they are willing, then the Spirit will lift the veil and they will come to see the truth and come to Christ. Many do; many more do not.
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate [can gaze upon] the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which come from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
Verse 18 is the bedrock foundation of our daily walk. Being transformed into His image is what is happening to us everyday! And the Lord receives ever-increasing glory as we do.
Let’s not be afraid to present the truth of the Gospel and Creation to others. Maybe the Spirit will use our humble efforts, our meager lunch, to work a miracle and speak to their hearts.
Abba, I pray that You will give me many opportunities to speak truth. Just one more soul, Lord, just one more soul…Amen.
