Lordship. Discipleship. Dying to self. Taking up our cross. Why would anyone subject himself to these? Because of who Jesus is!
14 If a king judges the poor with fairness, his throne will be established forever.
Little did Solomon know that he was describing the King of kings who was to come from his very own lineage! Jesus came through the line of David, who was Solomon’s father. We follow this lineage in Matthew 1, which gives us the lineage of Joseph, Jesus’ step-father. Luke 3 gives us the lineage of Mary, who is also from the line of David through Solomon’s full brother, Nathan (see Luke 3:31 and 1 Chronicles 3:5).
To be clear, Jesus did not come to set up an earthly kingdom. His goal was much bigger than that. He wanted to include the entire world in His kingdom. John 3:16 tells us that “God so loved the world,” and Titus 2:11 gives us The Plan:
For the grace of God has appeared [Jesus] that offers salvation to all people.
His kingdom goes beyond this life straight into heaven. Only God could do this, which explains Jesus’ real heritage as God’s Son.
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. John 1:18
Let’s follow this truth to its logical end:
- IF He is God in the flesh (Emmanuel means “God with us” see Isaiah 7:14),
- IF He has a kingdom and is, indeed, King of kings and LORD of lords (see Philippians 2:9-11 and Revelation 19:16),
- IF He followed such a radical plan to save us,
- IF He is your Lord and Savior,
- THEN let’s radically follow Him.
- THEN let’s spend an “inordinate” time with Him.
- THEN let’s consult Him on every decision throughout our day.
- THEN let’s worship Him and love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.
The Bible is God’s primary way of communicating with us. He speaks to us through its message, the message that HE commissioned the writers to write and then HE preserved it throughout the centuries. They dictated His words so that we would have His words in print. He speaks to us through those words just as He did to the writers even as they wrote them down. His Spirit confirms and interprets those words in our hearts and through His body, the Church.
Let’s RADICALLY READ His Word today and listen for His voice. Let’s apply what we know and ask Him to teach us what we don’t know.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. This life I live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:20
