Good News! God loves us and wants us! Through His Spirit, He has given us everything we need to be like Him!
25 Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.
Jesus brought good news from a distant land (heaven). His good news is that God loves us so much He came in the form of Jesus to live, die and rise again so that we could have eternal life (John 3:16, Phil. 2:5-10). That life is now living in us! Eternity has already begun for those who are in Christ and Christ in them.
Galatians 2:20 gives us the instructions of how to attenuate to God’s leading in our lives:
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. This life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Our faith is based upon His promises. Those promises are written down in Scripture. Our attitude is that we have been crucified along with Christ on the cross. We die to ourselves, our wants, desires, wishes, dreams, hopes, cravings, and our temptations so that Christ may live through us. We work to express His character: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Gal. 5:22-23), humility (Matt. 11:29), truth (Eph. 5:9), being noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy (Phil. 4:8). How? Through obedience and practice. Diligence and repetition are our best teachers. Listen, listen, listen to the Spirit!
How do we hear the voice of God? He is inside us, so it sounds like us. How can we discern between our “voice” and His voice? We base truth on what He has already told us. And what has he told us? He went to the trouble of having it written down for us. It’s the Bible! When we read the Bible, we enter into prayer because the Spirit speaks to us even as we read His words. I will go so far as to say that if a person doesn’t read God’s Word, he will not be able to discern His voice.
“I may listen to a thousand tongues, but I only hear one whisper.” This quote is from a song by First Call (back in the 80’s). We hear His gentle whisper by being becoming attuned to His voice, what He would say and do according to what is written down in Scripture. Today, may we spend time with Him in prayer–reading His Word–and die to ourselves (we ARE crucified, you know) and allow Christ to live through us as we emulate Him.
