Jesus reduced the entire Law to one command: To love as He loves. Do you have the desire? How about the power?
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Jesus changed the word, “fear,” to, “love.” “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34
As if His command was not enough, Jesus then based His entire ministry on this one principle by saying, 35 “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
The problem comes when we don’t want to love, but to hurt and to hate. Then, even if we WANT to love, we don’t have the power to overcome our own feelings and desires.
The Apostle Paul knew exactly how we feel. He said, 21 “So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me [inside trying to take over]. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who can rescue me from this body that is subject to death?” Romans 7:21-24.
So, even if we want to love God, we are subject to our rebellious nature and the feelings that rise up from our hearts. Without Christ, we are, indeed, wretched. But Paul doesn’t leave us here. He goes on:
25 “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus [Therefore, NO CONDEMNATION!], 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 7:25-8:2.
We still have our old nature because it is wrapped up in our flesh, but we also have the Spirit of Jesus Christ living in us giving us first the desire and then the power to do His will, all the time pronouncing us and keeping us clean, pure, and holy before Him ALL BECAUSE OF THE BLOOD OF JESUS.
13 “For it is God [the Spirit] who works in you to will [the desire] and to act [the power] in order to fulfill his good purpose [to do his will]. Phil. 2:13
What about when we sin now? Well, know that it is covered by the blood, paid for, and removed as far as the east is from the west. We serve Christ out of GRATITUDE IN OUR HEARTS for all He has done for us. We enjoy sweet fellowship with Him. Why? Because He is CRAZY about us! “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1.
As we worship Him in our respective churches this morning, let’s express our gratitude to Him for such a great and most excellent salvation.
