Jesus promises us ever- increasing light as we walk with Him. He IS our light!
18 The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
In one way, we are always moving forward in that Jesus is being fashioned in us:
29 For those God foreknew he also predestined [it has always been God’s plan for us] to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, Ro 8:29
18 And we, who with unveiled faces [Jesus has been revealed to us] all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2Co 3:18
In another sense, our spiritual journey is like canoeing upstream. We make progress as long as we keep paddling, but as soon as we stop, we drift backwards.
All of as sudden, verses 20-27 become relevant:
20 My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. 21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body.
Constant vigil. We must fix our eyes on Jesus (Heb. 12:2).
23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
Our hearts are the residence of Christ in our lives (Eph. 3:17). We have in our hearts a throne and a cross. Which one we are on and which one Christ is on depends on each decision we make and the attitude we have. Guard well!
24 Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
Our speech flows from our thoughts and from our heart. If we guard our hearts and transform our minds with the Word and constantly listen to His Spirit, we will do well with our speech.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. 26 Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. 27 Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.
When we decided to follow Jesus, it wasn’t a one-time decision– it was from then on! What part of, “Follow Me,” do we not understand? Let’s live for Him today and enjoy living in His ever- increasing light.
