What if…we asked the Spirit for His direction BEFORE we did anything? What might happen?
9 Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path.
We may not know the final outcome, but we will certainly have a better feel for what is going on. God usually works behind the scenes and it takes discernment to notice it. We must also have the right heart attitude to perceive His moving. When we are in tune with Him, the next verse applies:
10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
This whole mindset has been about our benefit; but what about the benefit of the kingdom of God? Let us consider what would happen if we asked the Spirit what He would have us do according to Jesus’s command to love:
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Jn 13:34-35
What is the goal? For all men (people) to know that we are His disciples. Why? Because sacrificial love (15:13) is NOT how the world shows or interprets love! Jesus explains in chapter 15:
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain–
[A primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy)–abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry (for), (make it) thine own]
—in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in [stay focused on] my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Jn 15:9-12
What a radical love, too! Jesus had just demonstrated how to love by washing the disciples’ feet. He SERVED them!
What? Love one another.
How? Obey my commands–as I tell you through My Spirit everyday, ALL day.
Why? So the world may see God’s love demonstrated through us. This is how we win arguments, lawsuits, and “every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God 2 Cor. 10:5).”
Benefits: His joy in us/Our joy complete!
Let’s strengthen our resolve to seek his face and His will today. Let us take courage from these verses:
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power [that the Spirit gives]. 11 Put on the full armor of God [according to 1 Cor. 13] so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms [we take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ, 2 Cor. 10:3-5]. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God [the LORD Jesus- Romans 13:14] , so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand [be the last man standing].
