We cannot trust our own judgement or intellect. We simply can never know enough! We must trust Jesus sometime…
23 Above all else, guard [keep a watch over] your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Pr 4:23
At first glance, this verse means to keep your heart safe-maybe from falling in love, or something like that. But, coupled with this verse:
9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? Je 17:9
I think it can mean something different. Let’s rephrase it:
23 Above all else, guard against your heart, for it is the wellspring of trouble in your life. Pr 4:23
I see our heart as an amplifier of what we are feeling. What we feel has to do with what we think (believe) about a subject or situation. Because of our sin nature, we cannot trust what we see, hear, feel or believe concerning God, His world, His plan, His love, or anything else, for that matter. NOW WE KNOW WHY WE NEED THE HOLY SPIRIT!
The next verse in Jeremiah ought to scare us to death:
10 “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind,
to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.” Je 17:10
Aren’t we GLAD that we don’t live according to Old Testament rules, but according to grace?!!! Here is the NT version:
13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. He 4:13
It sounds the same, doesn’t it? But, look at what follows:
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Heb 4:12-16
WOW! Now, THAT’S the difference between the OT and the NT: GRACE!!! Let’s show grace to all those around us today. We will be Just Like Jesus!
