Proverbs 29 12-29-18

Our decisions are our own, but God has so much more for us than we can ever imagine if we would only trust Him.

1 A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy. Pr 29:1

If God allows each of us to make our own choices and to deal with the fruit/ consequences of our choices, then this verse takes on the flavor of a dad who has to get out of the way of a rebellious son or daughter and allow him/her to fail.

Without remedy- There are many ways that lead to physical death, but I think there is more to this phrase. A person who ruins a marriage through infidelity or abuse may not be able to heal the relationship [see verse 3]; a person who spends years “chasing the dragon” of cocaine or crack ruins his health, wealth, and relationships. Can this person get all he has lost back? No, but there IS forgiveness and spiritual restoration. Jesus will help pick up the pieces of our lives and make something new and beautiful out of them.

It all boils down to this: Will we trust Him with our lives or won’t we? It’s a daily decision based on a first- time response to His invitation to follow Him.

There is another side to this verse, and that is the one doing the rebuking.

16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. 1Jn 5:16a
We have a responsibility to pray for the people in our lives that are making bad choices. When the Spirit leads, we must be obedient and brave their wrath and confront them with their sin.

11 Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. 12 If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay each person according to what he has done? Pr 24:11-12

Let’s pray that God would use us to come alongside those who are struggling and help them see Jesus, learn to trust Him, and then follow Him with us. There is no greater reward than to witness God working in someone’s life through us!
