Desiring to be like Christ is a sure sign of salvation; being like Christ is a sure sign of walking in step with Him.
Proverbs 22:11 He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious will have the king for his friend.
I like to rewrite this verse to read:
He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious [shows that he] has the king for his friend.
Consider this analogy based on John 7:37-38 (streams of living water) and 2 Timothy 2:20-21 (vessels of gold and silver vs. wood and clay): We receive God’s love, wisdom, and instruction through a spiritual pipe that begins at His throne and is connected to our heads. At that connection is a valve; at its installation it is barely turned on (a safety feature), but is gradually increased as we grow in Christ. God’s love, wisdom and knowledge are processed through our minds, thus transforming our minds and hearts, and are then made to flow out of us to others in the forms of grace, mercy, kindness, gentleness, truth, etc. There is a valve on the out-going pipe, as well. Its setting is our responsibility. Christ directs the flow, but we determine what and how much flows out.
The more we know of Him by spending time with Him in conversation, by reading His Word, by discussing with others, and through worship, the more access and control we have over the outgoing valve. We WANT to share Jesus and His love with everyone; we leave it to Him to tell us who and when and how. We are simply available.
Being a vessel of gold or silver requires purity of mind and soul. Let’s make Him the Object of our affection and attention today. Let’s have FAITH:
