Proverbs 13 9-13-18

If we are in Christ, then we have a battle going on inside all the time; who will sit on the throne of our hearts?

[6] Righteousness guards the man of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

We tend to think of righteousness and wickedness as things we do rather than things we are. Christ has taken us in our wicked state and made us His righteousness:

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

What does this mean for us? It means that in everything we read (such as Proverbs and Ephesians) we hear His voice coaching us in how to allow our righteousness to shine on the outside.

Philippians 2:12-13 Therefore, my dear friends…continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling [work your salvation from the inside out], [13] for it is God who works in you to will [giving us the desire] and to act [and the power] according to his good purpose.

All of a sudden, Proverbs 13:12 takes on a new light:

[12] Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire is fulfilled, it is a tree of life.

Our desire is to know Christ and be like Him. If anything else is our greater desire, we need to re-evaluate where we stand with Him.

Here is what we were:

Ephesians 2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

Here is what we are now:

2 Corinthians 2:15 For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.

Let’s set our hearts and minds on Jesus, on loving Him above all things, and on serving Him as He leads us. Expect to be shown insights and be given understanding as you go. Also expect to be disciplined–it’s Him treating us as His children!
