Proverbs 22 6-22-18

Our tendency is to drift, like canoeing upstream. We must press on, being diligent to stay alert to the enemy’s distractions.

Proverbs 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

I have always considered this verse to be about raising kids, but what about us spiritually? When we are born again, aren’t we children? Jesus called His disciples little children many times; in fact, He called them His little faithless ones (it was a term of endearment). John referred to his flock in Ephesus as his dear children. Here is a passage on which to hang our hopes:

1 John 3:1-2 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. [2] Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

One of the things that concerns me is our high mobility as a society. One of the down sides to being able to go-go-go is not meeting together routinely. Here is what happens: Just as a coal, when removed from a fire, grows cold, so do we as Christians when we miss meeting together. We lose our spiritual fervor and our encouragement to be Christ’s.

Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. [25] Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one anotherand all the more as you see the Day approaching.

My Sunday’s Cool (Sunday School) class is about to enter the last section of FOUNDATIONS, which deals with the End Times. Some of it will probably show up in these morning devotionals. I am also looking for a way for folks who can’t make the class to join us (online, maybe). I will let you know. We will start with our reason for even talking about it:

1 Thessalonians 4:18 Therefore encourage each other with these words (and the last part of Hebrews 10:25).

Stay connected–flesh and blood connected–as much as you can. We are all coals in a fire 🔥.
