What separates us from animals? It is our ability to reason, to decide–to listen to His voice and obey.
Proverbs 10:31 From the mouth of the righteous comes the fruit of wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be silenced.
Knowing that we are creatures of passion, we must realize that we are stuck in a state of spiritual childhood–young childhood. If you’ve ever been around a three-year-old at Walmart, you know what I’m talking about! Whatever we “see,” we want–and Satan makes sure we see with our eyes, feel with our flesh, and are convinced we have the right!
1 John 2:16 (KJV) For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
In order to know and speak wisdom, we must first give ourselves to the Holy Spirit and allow wisdom to be grown in us. Paul said it like this:
1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man [an adult], I put childish ways behind me.
It is my opinion that we never get out of the nursery, but we can have wisdom grown in our lives, and what better way to show that fruit than by our speech! We tend to reveal what is in our hearts by what we say.
Matthew 12:34-35 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.
Let’s use the 5-second rule and check with the Spirit before saying anything. We will learn a lot through listening! I can’t help but think of Proverbs 17:28,
Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.
Actually, He is being wise and discerning IF he holds his tongue!
As we worship in our respective places, may we listen closely to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.
