Identifying the spiritual free radicals in our lives is tough but necessary toward achieving goodness.
Proverbs 5:20-21 Why be captivated [intoxicated], my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another man’s wife? For a man’s ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all his paths.
How does one move from verse 19 to verse 20? I think the answer is found in 2 Peter 1:
Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil [inappropriate, out-of-control, twisted, arrogant] desires.
What we need is the mind of Christ, which we have (1 Cor. 2:16). Through the Spirit, we have everything we need for godly living:
2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
If we recognize our natural tendency to think and act in an ungodly fashion, we are really responding to the Spirit within us as He highlights areas of danger in our lives. The term, goodness, means “moral excellence” and is achieved by wanting what He wants. It’s the essence of a Christian walk.
We must move from being feeling-driven to Spirit-led. Learning His Word is a great start! Applying it is the next step. Let’s ask the Spirit to help us be more like Jesus today.
