Remaining open while having or giving an opinion is essential to hearing His voice.
Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but just because you have an opinion doesn’t mean that you’re right. Only ONE has complete knowledge, which is why we must remain open to the Spirit. He speaks to us in four basic ways:
- His Word. He wrote it down so that there would be no question about what He said.
- Prayer. He speaks to us through our conscience and our attention (when we notice something or someone, it may be the Spirit saying, “Look!”).
- Circumstances. Being connected to His Spirit allows us to act and respond in a godly manner. Always check with Him.
- Other people. They don’t have to be Christians, but they usually are. God uses His Body to maintain His Body.
Humility requires us to “take a lower seat at the banquet table” (Luke 14:7-11). We should consider others’ opinions of greater worth than our own (Phil. 2:3-4).
When should we stand up against other people’s opinions? When they are biblically wrong, and when the situation is dangerous. Again, check with the Spirit to MAKE SURE you are correct. Two or more people can usually verify what is right.
In any case, DO NOT GET ANGRY, for “human anger does not bring about the righteousness God desires” (James1:20).
Walking in the Spirit should be a constant dialogue with the LORD. We are, indeed, in two worlds at one time! “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25
