Proverbs 16 4-16-18

We follow the Lord and He directs our heart. Whoever said, “Just follow your heart,” was an idiot!!!

Proverbs 16:9 In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.

In other words, what we feel and what God wants us to do can be two different things–it usually is! We must learn to not trust our heart or even our gut feeling (Gibbs) and go with what the Spirit is saying to us.

So, what do we do with verses like these?

Psalms 27:8 My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

God can direct our hearts. We must learn to discern, and be open to His will for our lives. We can only trust Him as much as we know Him, so getting to know Him is primary. Open communication through conversational prayer is essential. Set aside what you think God may think of you and trust His Word:

Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”

Jeremiah 31:3 The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.

John 16:27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

John 17:23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

Also, quit deciding for ourselves…anything! Ask the Lord to express His opinion on small stuff. He wants to be that intimate with us; He wants to share with us EVERY decision. We learn by repetition and experience, so let’s put God to the test and see if He really wants us to trust Him in everything! It’s what having His Spirit inside is really all about. Then we are ready when the hard stuff comes (Luke 16:10).

One last verse:

Proverbs 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.

Let’s not trust our lives to chance or whim, but to the God of the universe who loves us with an everlasting love!
