How desperate are you? We cannot be righteous on our own—we were not created to be. WE NEED JESUS!
Proverbs 7:1-5 (NIV)
 My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.
 Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
 Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. [Heb. 8:10]
 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your kinsman;
 they will keep you from the adulteress, from the wayward wife [tempter] with her [or his] seductive words.
There are things in my life that I fight; the world says, “Follow your heart.” If I did that, I would end up trading my birthright for a bowl of beans (see Genesis 25:29-34 when Esau swore his birthright to Jacob for stew). We need to keep our eyes on the prize:
Philippians 3:12-14 (NIV)
 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
I am desperate to be found faithful at the end of my life whether it’s tomorrow or in 20 years. Jesus has made me (and you) a series of promises:
Revelation 2:7 To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.
Revelation 2:11 He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death.
Revelation 2:17 To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.
Revelation 2:26-28 To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations—just as I have received authority from my Father. I will also give him the morning star.
Revelation 3:5 He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels.
Revelation 3:12 Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name.
Revelation 3:21-22 To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Indeed, let us have ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to us today!
