Proverbs 5 4-5-18

Face it: Our feelers are stuck, on a 9 most of the time. But we are being egged on. By whom?

Proverbs 5:3-4 For the lips of an adulteress [the serpent, the devil] drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; [4] but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword.

It really doesn’t matter what temptation you’re facing because the feeling is the same: 100%, in-your-face DESIRE!

How do we beat DESIRE?

  1. Know your limits. Know the difference between God’s will in all things and you wanting your own way. “I do what I want” only works for Christians if we want whatever the Spirit wants.
  2. Pray! Ask God to strengthen you when you are tempted. He will help! 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. We may not succeed this time, but we will be better armed next time!
  3. Keep backing up. Set those guard rails further from the edge. Ask the LORD to reveal to you what is triggering a 10 and build a hedge [fence] around it.

King David knew about guard rails and hedges. He knew not to go out on his balcony at night and look down! [1 Samuel 11:2]. He penned these words:

Psalms 101:1-3

I will sing of your love and justice; to you, O LORD, I will sing praise. He used praise in his life to conquer his heart.

[2] I will be careful to lead a blameless life— when will you come to me? I will walk in my house with blameless heart. He knew his boundaries and fortified his mind.

[3] I will set before my eyes no vile thing. He determined what his weaknesses were and then went about safeguarding himself from them.

The deeds of faithless men I hate; they will not cling to me. He wanted to be godly; he chose not to be influenced by them and instead chose to follow the Spirit.

4. Be content with what God has given you. Isn’t He enough? We need to answer a question: Who is more important here, Him or us? He is fitting us to do His will along with making us like Christ; EVERYTHING works to that end–even our struggles, limitations and failures. He really IS a BIG GOD!

Let’s praise Him often today using praise to keep temptation at bay.

Psalms 63:4-5

[4] I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.

[5] My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

Psalms 26:2-3

[2] Test me, O LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind;

[3] for your love is ever before me, and I walk continually in your truth.

Psalms 51:14-17

[14] Save me from bloodguilt [wrong-doing], O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

[15] O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.

[16] You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

[17] The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
