Guard rails–who needs them? I know a certain van from Hulbert on our ski trip who did! We do, too.
Proverbs 3:1-2 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
God gives us free will (the privilege to make choices) and allows us to live with the blessings/consequences of our choices. I just explained the plight of humanity!
God gives us guidance and guard rails through His Word, His Spirit, His people, and circumstances. Note: the first two are interchangeable because Jesus IS the Word and the Spirit.
Now that we are His, He rejoices over us even as we learn to live righteously. He doesn’t see us in our sin, but rather in our struggle to become like Him.
As we read this chapter, we find many guard rails:
3-4 Love and Faithfulness are to be our foundation for all relationships.
5-6 Trust the Lord 100% and ourselves 0%.
7-8 Don’t be cocky; do thing His way.
9-10 Honor God with your money and see how much your priorities change!
11-12 The LORD’S discipline is always gentle and specific. Don’t accept any other kind (it’s not Him).
13-18 God’s wisdom is knowledge of Jesus. Find out all you can!
19-20 Wisdom should be our foundation, understanding our methodology, and knowledge (knowing God/Jesus/Spirit intimately and fully) our goal.
21-26 Our one desire should be to become more and more like Jesus. HE is our model for righteous living–for GOD! Understand this wisdom and you will have sound judgment and discretion.
27-35 Basic guard rails for relationships and attitudes.
WARNING: Rushing through your time with the LORD and/or skipping reading His Word shows a proud heart. Don’t do it!!! Let’s heed those guard rails.
