There is great revelation and many truths in this passage. Jesus was talking plainly to them (16:29). It was straight up this time.
[7] If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
[10] Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.
This next verse you have heard before in 10:38.
[11] Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.
Verse 12 is a key verse for us,
[12] I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
Jesus tells them plainly that He is going to the Father-heaven! He introduces His main objective, which He explains in verse 15 and on. His going ushered in the Holy Spirit’s coming!
Verses 13-14 have been misconstrued and abused for centuries. What does Jesus mean by “In My name?” I think, first, that it implies a relationship-the Spirit must be present in order to have power. Secondly, we must be connected-walking with Him and not against Him. Thirdly, we must must wait for the invitation to join Him in His work-communication. All of these requirements take the human equation out of it. It’s all Him and about Him!
